“Our theme today is not only to commemorate Mother’s Day, but we also remember that women, we are Mothers of the Earth, we are responsible for caring for the earth,” said Desi Anwar.
Apart from the four speakers, there were also the Chair of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Water Issues Retno Marsudi, the Head of the Indonesian Heritage Agency (IHA) Esti Nurjadin, the Founder and Chair of the CT Arsa Foundation Anita Tanjung, and the Editor-in-Chief of hitclubapk3 Indonesia Titin Rosmasari.
“As mothers of the earth, women have a role in protecting the earth and the future of future generations. Women’s big role in sustainability does not appear suddenly. It is born from life experience, social responsibility, and women’s closeness to the sources of life,” said Puan in her speech.
Puan also emphasized the unique characteristics of national Mother’s Day which have their roots in the first Indonesian Women’s Congress in Yogyakarta, 22-25 December 1928.
“Mother’s Day in Indonesia has its roots in the historic first Indonesian women’s congress which was held in Yogyakarta on 22 to 25 December 1928. This means that the Mother’s Day we commemorate in Indonesia is a celebration of the rise of the Indonesian women’s movement. We inherit and commemorate that spirit every December 22 to emphasize that women are not spectators, but active actors in various areas of life,” said Puan.
Meanwhile, Retno Marsudi conveyed from a global perspective a very urgent issue for humanity’s future, namely water, as a source of life and the challenge of environmental resilience in the midst of the climate crisis.
Retno has received the UN’s trust as the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Water Issues since November 2024.
“Member countries and the UN secretary general believe that if given the opportunity, women will be able to lead well. Women have been proven to be part of the solution, including in overcoming water challenges and in achieving the SDGs women have proven to be able to become guardians of the earth, Mother of Earth. World Bank data shows that involving women can make projects 6-7 times more effective,” said Retno.
Head of Indonesian Heritage Agency (IHA), Esti Nurjadin, in her speech shared in-depth views on the role of women in sustainability issues.
“Tonight’s theme Mothers of the Earth, Women Power to Shape a Sustainable Future is a very relevant call for all of us. It not only celebrates the role of women, but also emphasizes women power, the power of women’s leadership in the form of a just, tough and sustainable future,” said Esti.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of PPPA, Veronica Tan, highlighted the very important role of women.Veronica stated that gender equality must start at home.
“So if we want to give access to women, we will return it, whether we as women have done that ourselves. Give the same access to our daughters, so that they have the same position, maybe starting from the family again,” he added.
