What’s the cause?
In the war last July, the war broke out after one Cambodian soldier died during a firefight with Thai troops in the Emerald Triangle area, the border location of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Both sides accused each other and claimed the action was necessary for self-defense.
Thailand tightened border controls, limiting the mobility of citizens, while Cambodia stopped imports of fruit and vegetables from its enemy country.
The situation got worse after a series of mine explosions occurred. The first explosion was on July 16 and caused one soldier to lose his leg.
The second explosion injured five Thai soldiers. The two countries finally launched counterattacks against each other.
Meanwhile, Cambodia accused the Thai Armed Forces of launching an attack on the country along the border area on July 24.
The attacks included the Tamone Thom Temple, Ta Krabey Temple, and Mom Bei, in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces.
Cambodia condemns in the strongest terms and expresses deep indignation at the unprovoked and premeditated military aggression by Thailand.
“Faced with this blatant aggression, Cambodian forces had no choice but to respond in self-defense to safeguard Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said in a letter sent to the UN in July.
A few days after the war, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire after being mediated by Malaysia with assistance from China and the United States.
In the agreement, both countries must stop hostile acts. However, Thailand and Cambodia accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
Five months after that, precisely in early December, war flared again between Thailand and Cambodia.
Thailand accused Cambodia of initiating the attack and they had to defend themselves by retaliating.Meanwhile, Cambodia claims Thailand produces fake news to stir up tensions.
“The Thai Army Area 1 is actively spreading false news that is far from the facts, by publishing that Cambodia is moving heavy weapons along the Thai-Cambodian border,” said an official release from the Ministry of Defense.
Furthermore, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense stated that such news was fake. This country’s military, they said, has never moved any heavy weapons and respected the ceasefire agreement and peace agreement between the two countries.
