Chairman of the National Economic Council (DEN),
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan
asking universities to conduct research to increase productivity
garlic
in the country.
According to Luhut, Indonesia needs garlic seeds that are not only productive but also resistant to climate change.
“Speaking of garlic, we have to talk about the quality of the seeds we have. Not just the quantity, but the quality and quality
adaptable
against climate change,” said Luhut when speaking at the Solo Investment Festival in Solo, Friday (12/12).

Luhut encouraged universities in Central Java and DI Yogyakarta to carry out research to increase garlic productivity. He mentioned among them Sebelas Maret University (UNS), Diponegoro University (Undip), and Gajah Mada University (UGM).
“Sebelas Maret University, Diponegoro University, for example, is studying soil at a height of one thousand meters which is suitable for garlic seeds,” he said.
“UGM, don’t just worry about diplomas. You guys do a study, where in Central Java can we grow garlic,” he said.
Luhut himself has carried out independent research to look for new varieties through genome sequencing. The research was carried out in Lake Toba at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level.
“It’s not expensive. I have my own pocket money, which is the strongest. There are our young professors who can do it,” he said.
Luhut claims that his research has now shown encouraging results.According to him, this research has produced more productive onion seed varieties.
“They are doing genome sequencing research, I just need to facilitate them. Now they have reached the end, starting production into seeds
yield
“It’s higher,” he said.
According to Luhut, increasing garlic productivity has great potential to reduce imports in the country. This is because the import value of garlic seeds in Indonesia reaches US$770 million or the equivalent of IDR 12.8 trillion.
“If it can be (reduced) by 50 percent in stages, it would be equal to 350 million USD. That’s almost 4 trillion rupiah,” said Luhut.
