The Dutch media spread rumors that John Heitinga was a coaching candidate

Based on the Voetbal Primeur report, Heitinga is linked with the Indonesian national team because he is not currently coaching any team.The 42-year-old tactician was fired by Ajax Amsterdam in November 2025 because of the team’s inconsistent results.

“Currently the position of coach for the Indonesian National Team is still vacant and Heitinga is also unemployed. The former footballer who has Indonesian blood just left Ajax because of disappointing results. Following three accounts [Indonesian National Team, Erick Thohir, and Jordi Cruyff] has led to speculation about a possible collaboration,” continued the Voetbal Primeur report.
Even though his track record in the Ajax coaching chair is not impressive, Heitinga has a strong track record as a strategist.He has experience at giant European clubs like Liverpool.
After retiring as a player, Heitinga continued his career as coach of the Ajax youth team for five years from 2016 to 2021.
Having served as interim coach of Ajax from January to June 2023, Heitinga was invited by David Moyes as assistant coach of West Ham United in the 2023/2024 season.
Simultaneously with the arrival of Arne Slot to Liverpool in 2024/2025, Heitinga was also invited as assistant coach of the Reds.The Premier League title was the result of his work with the coaching team.
