Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a potential breakdown in relations with
United States
after Washington put forward a plan to end the war with
Russia
, which Kyiv considered too accommodating to Moscow’s demands.
Zelensky made the warning Friday in a speech to the Ukrainian people, shortly after he had a phone call with US Vice President JD Vance.

A Ukrainian presidential source said the call ended about 30 minutes before Zelensky’s statement was released, without providing details of the contents of the conversation.
Zelensky stressed that Ukraine would not ‘betray’ his cause.He promised to put forward a series of “alternatives” to the 28-point plan that is being debated and said to follow many of Russia’s demands.
“I will put forward arguments, I will convince, I will offer alternatives,” Zelensky said in a speech published on social media, citing

“We didn’t betray Ukraine in February 2022, and we won’t do it now.”
In other statements on social media, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine now faces a difficult choice: maintaining national dignity or maintaining the support of key allies in Washington.
“Ukraine could face very difficult choices, a loss of dignity, or the risk of losing key partners,” he said.
Kyiv together with its European allies are currently continuing to develop a response to the peace plan proposed by the US.But Zelensky’s strong reaction reflects deep concerns that pressure to accept a deal favorable to Moscow could weaken Ukraine’s position in the war that has raged since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
As of yet, there are no official details regarding any possible middle ground Ukraine might offer.But Zelensky emphasized that whatever is proposed, the red lines remain clear, Ukraine’s sovereignty is not up for negotiation.
