remains strictly limited. This step was taken because the potential danger from Mount Semeru’s activity is still high.
Head of the PVMBG Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Priatin Hadi Wijaya, emphasized that the team’s report in the field shows that the route is still prone to being affected by volcanic material or cold lava.

“The report from the team in the field states that the route is still dangerous. We hope the public will be patient first,” said Hadi at the PVMBG Building in Bandung, Friday, citing

He explained that although the avalanche of hot clouds seemed to subside on Friday, the accumulation of eruptive material on the slopes of the mountain could at any time slide down if triggered by heavy rain. This condition has the potential to cut off road access in the river valley area again.
PVMBG ensures that coordination will continue with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), TNI and Polri to determine when the route will be safe to pass again.
“The temporary Malang-Lumajang route must be completely restricted. There should be no loss of life due to people’s ignorance of crossing vulnerable zones when it rains,” he said.
Hadi emphasized that the main priority currently is mitigating casualties, including preventing the risk of burns due to hot clouds and other secondary dangers in vital routes.
Until now, the status of Mount Semeru is still at Level IV or Watch.PVMBG also recommends a sterilization area eight kilometers from the peak for all types of activities, to avoid the risk of flint throwing that may still occur.
