The incident occurred in the 88th minute when Vinicius Júnior’s calf was kicked by Alaves defender Nahuel Tenaglia in the penalty box, but the referee chose to continue the match without checking VAR.

He was also surprised that the incident was not reviewed via Video Assistant Referee (VAR), even though it occurred in a crucial area and had the potential to change the course of the match.
“I thought it was a clear penalty. Vini moved very quickly, there was contact and I was very surprised that it didn’t even go to VAR,” said Alonso as quoted by

This moment became a matter of public discussion, especially after replays on social media showed contact between Alaves players Tenaglia and Vinicius in the penalty box.

A number of observers believe that the referee’s decision shows inconsistency in the application of the rules, especially regarding the use of VAR in La Liga this season.
Despite missing a penalty, Los Blancos were still able to secure a 2-1 win over Alavés at Mendizorroza and take home three important points.
Alonso also emphasized that his team did not want to get involved in the polemic of the referee’s decisions and chose to focus on performance and match results.
“There’s still a long way to go and it’s an important moment, but we have to continue the good things we did today,” Alonso said.
Madrid’s victory against Alavés reduced the points gap to four points with Barcelona who occupy the top of the La Liga standings.
