Tension between
Thailand
and
Cambodia
The border has heated up again and attracted world attention, especially around the Preah Vihear Temple, which has long been a source of dispute between the two countries.
Preah Vihear Temple, which stands on the edge of a plateau overlooking the Cambodian lowlands, is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to the god Shiva.

UNESCO recognizes this temple as a World Heritage Site because of its authenticity and cultural value.
However, regional management still faces obstacles due to boundary disputes between Thailand and Cambodia. Its location right on the border makes it a source of prolonged disputes.
UNESCO also reminded Cambodia and Thailand not to damage the world heritage of the Preah Vihear Temple.
They assessed that fighting in the historic area could threaten the preservation of the temple, and urged both sides to protect border cultural heritage and comply with international legal obligations.
Previously, the Thailand-Cambodia dispute began with a boundary agreement in 1907, when a map placed the Preah Vihear Temple in the French colony.
Thailand took over the temple again in 1954, until the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the temple belonged to Cambodia.
However, tensions escalated again in 2008 when clashes occurred around Preah Vihear, with Thailand still claiming parts of the area around the temple.
For both countries, this area is not only a historical site, but also a symbol of national identity and a religious center.
Because of this, any claims or military activity around the shrine often triggers strong reactions and increases the risk of clashes, as has been seen again in recent days.
This border tension emphasizes how sensitive the status of Preah Vihear Temple is in Thai-Cambodian relations, and the need for diplomatic efforts to avoid further escalation.
