Mark Rutte believes there is only one person in the world who can make peace

In a statement after a meeting with foreign ministers of NATO members on Wednesday (3/12), Rutte said this person was the first to be able to invite Russia and Ukraine to sit down together.No one has been able to get the two parties to negotiate properly since Moscow invaded Kyiv in February 2022.
“There is only one person in the world who can break the stalled negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine. He is United States President Donald J. Trump. He did it,” Rutte was quoted as saying

“He (Trump) started dialogue (with Russia-Ukraine) since February 2025 and until now […] and that is crucial. In the end the US is NATO’s biggest ally and the strongest country on earth,” he continued.
According to Rutte, the US under Trump was able to break the deadlock and ensure that all conflicting parties were willing to “comply”.
He praised Trump, who he said had a significant role in stopping the war which had the potential to spread to Europe.
Therefore, the former Dutch Prime Minister considered it natural that the US representative was absent from the NATO meeting that day.Because after all, Washington still has a big role in peace efforts in Ukraine.
This NATO meeting was held after negotiations between Trump’s special envoy and representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin broke down again.The talks discussed peace plans in Ukraine.
Even so, Trump remains optimistic that his envoy has done his best.
“The impression is that they want […] he (Putin) wants the war to end. I think he wants to return to normal life. He wants to return to trade with the United States rather than losing thousands of soldiers every week. Their impression is very strong that he will make a deal,” said Trump.
