Abu Shahab is the leader of the Popular Forces based in Rafah.In an official release, the group confirmed he died from a gunshot wound while mediating a family dispute.

They denied that Abu Shahab was killed by Hamas.Meanwhile, Israeli media on Thursday (4/12) reported that he died at Soroka hospital in southern Israel.
There is not much information about Abu Shahab’s background, especially when the aggression took place.Various reports say that he is part of the Tarabin Bedouin tribe in southern Gaza.
He was almost unknown in the area until the Popular Forces appeared.Their members reach 100 people.
Initially the group’s name was Anti-Terror Services, then last May they changed the name to People’s Army.
The group presents itself as an alternative to Hamas.However, their presence was criticized by many Palestinians because they were considered Israeli collaborators amidst the brutal aggression of the Zionist forces.
Residents are also not interested in this group.Apart from that, Abu Shahab is known as a criminal because he was imprisoned by the Palestinian authorities on drug charges for several years.
Then when Israel launched aggression in October 2023, AbuShahab escaped from prison.The Popular Forces are even known as Israeli collaborators.
Israel also reportedly blocked weapons and funds for the Popular Forces.
Unclear ideology
Even though he is the leader of the group, Abu Shahab is considered to not have a clear stance and ideology as to where he will take his armed group.At the start, this man in his early 30s showed the image of an anti-terrorism group.However, this claim is inversely related because they have ties to ISIS.
Most of the cooperation between the groups concerns smuggling from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula to Gaza.

“Our main goal is to separate Palestinians who have nothing to do with Hamas from the fire of war,” the article said
After receiving a lot of criticism as a collaborator, Abu Shahab tried to downplay his ties with Israel.However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that.
Netanyahu said the Israeli government was using armed clans to fight Hamas.
The idea of using such troops, according to Netanyahu, was the result of suggestions from security officials, even after previous failed attempts at cooperating with local groups such as the South Lebanese Army.
Looting
Popular Forces has sought to portray itself as a group that helps distribute aid in Gaza, particularly in locations run by the US- and Israel-backed Humanitarian Aid Foundation (GHF).
“I lead a group of citizens from this community who volunteer to protect humanitarian aid from looting and corruption,” said Abu Shahab.
Popular Troops shared photos of troops distributing aid.
However, Abu Shahab and the People’s Army have since been accused of looting aid convoys.
An internal United Nations memo lists the People’s Army as “the main and most influential stakeholder behind the systematic and massive looting.”
The main security source in Gaza also confirmed that the People’s Army participated in the looting.
