“Could pose a potential risk to aircraft [flying over Venezuelan territory] at all altitudes,” the FAA said in a statement
ABC News
.
However, the danger threat in question was not stated in detail. What is clear is that this advice applies to every plane that takes off or lands in Venezuela.
The Pentagon itself has confirmed the warning. They said a warning was issued and would last for 90 days.
Former Department of Transportation Inspector General Mary Schiavo said the FAA is accustomed to issuing this kind of notification whenever there is a military conflict. However, he hopes that all pilots will still pay attention to him.
“I wouldn’t consider it a threat of any attack, because I’ve seen this many times. But as a pilot myself, I would definitely heed it,” said Schiavo.
Schiavo suspects that the US is anticipating military action by Venezuela or planning other actions against drug ships.
This warning comes as the US government increases pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The US military has launched bombers towards the Venezuelan coast and sent the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford to the region.
The aircraft carrier Ford and several other destroyers are the latest additions to the US stance that has sent its largest force around the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela.
US President Donald Trump’s administration does not consider Maduro to be Venezuela’s legitimate leader.Maduro now faces narcoterrorism charges in the US.
The US has also carried out attacks on small vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean accused of transporting drugs to the US and killed more than 80 people.
