Update on Floods Surrounding North Sumatra Region: 17 People Died

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted

and landslides hit seven districts/cities in North Sumatra (

).The disaster occurred due to heavy rain triggered by Tropical Cyclone KOTO which developed in the Sulu Sea and Cyclone Seed 95B which was observed in the Malacca Strait.
Based on records, up to now 17 residents have reportedly died while dozens of others have suffered injuries.
Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said that there were 4 districts/cities that were hit by landslides and floods simultaneously, namely Sibolga City, North Tapanuli, Central Tapanuli and South Tapanuli.

Meanwhile, three other areas such as Padangsidimpuan City, Mandailing Natal Regency and South Nias were only flooded.
“Apart from the 17 fatalities, this incident also disrupted people’s lives and livelihoods,” said Abdul Muhari in his written statement, Wednesday (26/11).
The results of the interim report compiled by the BNPB Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) on Wednesday (26/11), at 07.00 WIB, from Sibolga Regency, showed that extreme weather characterized by heavy rain lasting more than two days had triggered floods and landslides.
“Areas affected by this flood include Angin Nauli Village in North Sibolga District, Aek Muara Pinang and Aek Habil Villages in South Sibolga District, Pasar Rear and Pasar Baru Villages in Sibolga Kota District,” he said.
The floodwaters flowed quite fast and hit houses, dragging vehicles and other infrastructure in their path.Currents also carry materials such as mud, tree trunks, building debris and household waste.
“Meanwhile, for landslides, the affected areas include Angin Nauli, Simare-mare, Sibolga Hilir, Hutabarangan, Huta Tonga and Sibual-buali sub-districts in North Sibolga District,” he explained.
Then Parombunan and Aek Mani Villages in South Sibolga District, Pancuran Bambu, Pancuran Dewa and Pancuran Kerambil Villages in Sibolga Sambas District.Next are Pasar Rear Village, Pasar Baru and Pancuran Cart in Sibolga Kota District.
“From this disaster, one resident was injured and has received treatment by the health team. Temporary material losses include 3 affected housing units including 1 shophouse. Several road accesses were also affected, disrupting residents’ mobilization,” he explained.
From data released by the North Sumatra Regional Police, in Sibolga City, 5 people died and 4 other people are still being searched for.
Separately in the South Tapanuli Regency area, floods and landslides have caused 8 people to die, 58 were injured and 2,851 residents were forced to evacuate.
“The results of the interim rapid assessment show that these two disasters have impacted 11 sub-districts including Sipirok, Marancar, Batangtoru, West Angkola, Muara Batangtoru, Angkola Sangkunur, South Angkola, Sayur Matinggi, Batang Angkola, Tanah Timbangan and Angkola Muaratais,” he explained.
South Tapanuli BPBD together with a joint team deployed heavy equipment to clear landslide material which blocked a number of residents’ road access.Meanwhile, as many as 50 housing units were affected and two bridges were cut off due to flooding and landslides in North Tapanuli Regency.
“BPBD and the joint team collected data and recommended the Pangaribuan-Silantom alternative route as a temporary road access,” he said.
Then in the Central Tapanuli region, as many as 1,902 housing units were affected by flooding in 9 sub-districts, including Pandan, Sarudik, Badiri, Kolang, Tukka, Lumut, Barus, Sorkam and Pinangsori sub-districts.
BPBD Central Tapanuli and the joint team set up refugee tents and distributed basic food aid to affected residents.All data collection such as the number of residents and affected areas is temporary.The data still has the potential to develop according to the results of further rapid studies in the field.
Based on data from the North Sumatra Regional Police, 4 people died as a result of being buried by a landslide, precisely in Hamlet 1, Mardame Village.Thus, up to now a total of 17 people have died as a result of floods and landslides.
However, the data submitted by BNPB is temporary and still has the potential to experience developments based on the results of follow-up rapid studies in the field.BNPB continues to monitor the development of the situation in the Greater Tapanuli area and coordinates with the regional government to accelerate emergency handling.
“BNPB urges local governments and the public to increase awareness of the potential for extreme weather that could continue in the next few days,” he explained.
