ethanol
as a new opportunity for Indonesia after directly observing its implementation in Brazil, a country that has previously relied on biofuels.
Pertamina’s Director of Business Transformation and Sustainability, Agung Wicaksono, emphasized that pure ethanol in Brazil is much more economical than gasoline.
“The price of pure ethanol is 70 percent cheaper than gasoline,” said Agung at the hitclubapk3Indonesia Sustainability Summit forum at Menara Bank Mega, South Jakarta, Wednesday (26/11).

Agung said that almost all gas stations in Brazil already use ethanol, either in the form of a mixture of at least E30 or pure ethanol.
“There is no gas station in Brazil that does not use ethanol. All their fuel is at least E30, in fact many are 100 percent ethanol,” he said.
According to him, the country’s automotive industry is also ready because vehicle engines are made flexible to use both types of fuel.
Apart from the price issue, Agung conveyed the benefits of ethanol that Brazil has felt since 1975. With the main raw materials being sugar cane and corn that can be grown continuously, the energy supply does not depend on fossil oil.
“It turns out that we have reduced carbon emissions to date by 2.4 billion tons of Co2,” he said.
He added that the use of ethanol also reduces the use of almost 4 billion barrels of fossil oil.
Agung considers Brazil’s experience to be an important lesson for Indonesia to start entering the blending stage such as E10, in accordance with government directions.
According to him, ethanol not only helps reduce emissions, but also opens up new economic opportunities because the raw material can be cultivated locally, reducing dependence on imports and creating jobs in the agricultural sector.

The forum presented various stakeholders, including Pertamina Director Agung Wicaksono, Special Presidential Envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and Environment and Forestry Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
