President of the United States
Donald Trump
threatened to cut salaries and fire airport staff who were absent after flights at dozens of airports were canceled due to lack of staff.
“All Air Traffic Controllers must get back to work, NOW!!! Anyone who doesn’t will be substantially “fired,” Trump said on his social media, Truth Social, Monday (10/11).
Trump then promised to give bonuses to air traffic controllers who did not take any leave at all during the government shutdown.

“I would recommend a BONUS of $10,000 per person for distinguished service to our country,” he said.
However, when Trump was asked by Fox News how and where the bonus money came from, he could not answer.
“I don’t know. I will get it from somewhere,” he was quoted as saying

Furthermore, Trump indicated that he would cut the salaries of airport staff who were absent during this time which was considered critical.
Air traffic control is a critical sector that is considered to have to continue working during a shutdown. However, during the cessation of operations, they were not paid.
Many airport staff have to take side jobs to meet their daily needs.
“For those who do nothing but complain, and take time off, even though everyone knows they will be paid, IN FULL, soon for the foreseeable future, I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH YOU,” Trump said.
Trump also said that airport staff who want to leave their jobs will not get severance pay.Even though the government had stated that it would pay salary arrears that had not been paid during the shutdown.
“If you wish to leave the service in the near future, please feel free to do so, WITHOUT payment or severance of any kind!,” he said.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has cut flights by up to 10 percent at 40 airports in the United States due to the shutdown since October 1.
As of November 10, more than 1,700 flights were canceled and thousands more were delayed.
