According to the draft plan, Ukraine would have to cede some territory in the east to Russia and cut the size of its military.Kyiv was also asked to commit to never joining NATO.
On the other hand, Ukraine will not get the Western peacekeeping troops it has been requesting, although European fighter jets will be stationed in Poland to provide protection.
Trump said that if fighting continued, Ukraine would still lose territory that it would also have to give up if the plan passed.
“However, they were very brave,” Trump said, praising the Ukrainian troops.
When asked about the possibility of Russia attacking other European countries, Trump replied that President Vladimir Putin was “not looking for further war.”
He also said Putin was “taking punishment” for a conflict that has lasted nearly four years, even though Trump said it “should have been a one-day war.”
On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the American plan.He stressed he would not “betray” Ukraine by approving a document deemed too favorable to the Kremlin.
Meanwhile, the White House stated that Washington discussed the plan in a balanced manner with Kyiv and Moscow.
