) The National Police prepared a scenario for traffic management due to damage to a number of road infrastructure due to floods and landslides that hit various areas in Sumatra.
Head of the National Police Traffic Corps, Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, said that the preparation of this traffic scheme was also carried out in connection with the 2026 Christmas and New Year (Nataru) transportation period.
“In West Sumatra there were also landslides. In Medan there were floods, heading to Aceh, yes. We have to prepare these steps collaboratively to be able to update how to act at that time. But we have formulated the scenario,” said Agus at the Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta City, DIY, Sunday (30/11).

Korlantas Polri, continued Agus, has also prepared a contingency plan for implementing traffic security at the end of the year which coincides with the potential for extreme weather. Not only in Sumatra, but in all regions that will be of interest during the upcoming Nataru transportation period.
“Because the weather in December-January is extreme. Of course, when a disaster occurs, when a flood occurs, there are contingency steps for how to act that we have taken,” added Agus.
Agus added that Korlantas Polri classifies security for the year-end transportation period into a number of categories.Includes handling of toll roads, including rest areas, then arterial roads, both district and provincial roads, as well as alternative roads to tourist destinations.
Korlantas Polri has explained the strategic framework for controlling the traffic security and traffic police.Meanwhile, Agus and his staff are now carrying out route surveys from Jakarta to Central Java and DIY.
“Hopefully this security can also run well. We are currently planning this with all stakeholders, ways of acting, including the possibility that there will be traffic jumps, both on toll roads, both on arterial roads, including in urban areas,” said Agus.
“This also includes controlling alternative routes and tourist routes. We are currently identifying this to prepare for Christmas and New Year Operations,” he concluded.
Flash floods submerged dozens of districts and cities in three provinces on Sumatra Island, namely North Sumatra, Aceh and West Sumatra in the last few days.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the total number of victims who died as a result of flash floods and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra reached 303 people as of Saturday (29/11) afternoon.
Apart from that, floods and landslides have caused damage to infrastructure in the form of roads and bridges. In North Sumatra, South Tapanuli to be precise, the Sidempuan-Sibolga national route was cut off at one point, while the Sipirok-Medan route was cut off at two points.
In Mandailing Natal, several roads such as Singkuang-Tabuyung and Bulu Soma-Sopotinjak were cut off due to floods and landslides.Efforts to open access were carried out through the deployment of heavy equipment.
Transportation access in several areas of Aceh also experienced significant damage. The North Sumatra-Aceh national border route was cut off due to landslides.Damage to the bridge in Meureudu caused the cessation of connectivity between Banda Aceh-Lhokseumawe-East Aceh-Langsa-Aceh Tamiang.
A number of districts such as Gayo Lues, Central Aceh and Bener Meriah are currently inaccessible by land due to total damage to national roads and bridges.Air routes are the main alternative with the use of Perintis Gayo Lues Airport and Rembele Bener Meriah Airport.
Then in West Sumatra, five bridges were damaged in Padang Pariaman.Landslides occurred on the Bukittinggi-Padang national route in the Padang Panjang area as well as the provincial route in Agam Regency.Around 200 vehicles were trapped due to road cuts in Ampek Koto District.
This loss of access also complicates the evacuation process and distribution of aid to the affected victims.
