Mount Semeru
down from Level IV (Alert) to Level III (Alert) in line with the decline in volcanic activity which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level (masl).
“Based on the results of the analysis and evaluation, starting from November 29 2025 at 09.00 WIB, the activity level of Mount Semeru has been lowered from Warning Level to Alert Level,” said Acting Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria in a written statement received in Lumajang Regency, East Java, Saturday.
According to him, the results of an integrated evaluation of monitoring data show that Mount Semeru’s activity after November 19 2025 is still dominated by surface processes with no indication of an increase in the supply of new magma from depth.

“Visually, repeated small-medium scale eruptions were observed with white-gray smoke columns as high as 300-1,000 meters. Lava avalanches were observed with a sliding distance of 800-1000 meters to Besuk Kobokan,” he said.
He explained that small-medium scale eruptive activity was not followed by indications of strengthening the supply of new magma and this was reinforced by low volcanic earthquake activity, indicating that magmatic pressure at depth had not increased significantly.
“The seismic velocity variation parameter (dv/v) experienced a decrease before the hot cloud incident on November 19 2025 and then tended to return to stability, indicating that the volcanic system was in a relaxation phase and was not experiencing pressurization,” he said.
He said the tiltmeter data did not show a consistent pattern of inflation or deflation, so there was no evidence of post-event magmatic deformation.
“With no significant anomalies found in monitoring data, it can be concluded that current activity is dominated by surface processes in the form of material accumulation, slope instability and shallow gas release,” he said.
Seismicity and deformation data show that there is no evidence of new intrusions or increased magmatic pressure. The main threat in the near future will be hot cloud avalanches and the potential for lahars as the intensity of rain increases.
“Mount Semeru has Alert status, so we ask the public/visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the peak (center of the eruption),” he said.
Beyond this distance, people do not carry out activities within 500 meters of the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because they have the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 km from the peak.
“The public is also prohibited from carrying out activities within a 5 km radius of the crater/top of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of throwing hot (incandescent) stones,” he said.
