The signing was attended by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, witnessed by US President Bill Clinton.
Yitzhak Rabin and Arafat shook hands for the first time even though they looked stiff.Almost all media in the world at that time immortalized this historic moment.
Witnessed by more than 3,000 guests, the signing of the historic peace agreement was marked by the two of them exchanging handshakes.
The handshake was said to symbolize their support for the agreement that will help establish Palestinian independent government in territory claimed by both parties. So writes the site whitehousehistory.com.
Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat did not sign the declaration themselves.Instead, it was Israel’s then-Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, and his Palestinian colleague who signed.
“The peace of the brave is at hand. The entire Middle East is already longing for the magic of a quiet, normal life,” Clinton said at the time.
“We know the difficult road ahead. Every peace has its own obstacles,” he continued.
Even Yitzhak Rabin firmly said he wanted to end the war immediately.
“We who have fought against you Palestinian people, we declare to you today with a loud and clear voice, ‘enough is enough blood and tears, enough’,” said Yitzhak Rabin.
“The difficult decisions we took together were decisions that required enormous courage,” said Yasser Arafat.
Unfortunately, the results of the Oslo agreement did not continue because Yizthak Rabin was shot dead two years later by radical Jews.Rabin’s successor, Benyamin Netanyahu (first term), is a hard-line right-wing figure who clearly opposes a peace agreement with Palestine.

writes, in 1996 Netanyahu became Israel’s youngest prime minister, on a platform that opposed failed peace efforts, especially the Oslo accords that granted limited autonomy to the Palestinians.
Under his leadership, control over Palestinian life grew stronger. The military occupation of the West Bank is tightly managed, while Jewish settlement construction is widespread, giving Netanyahu the support of aggressive, pro-settler community groups.
