The radius of this typhoon is terrifying, covering almost the entire Philippines.Fung-wong is expected to bring winds and heavy rain to much of the island nation, which was hit last week by Typhoon Kalmaegi which killed more than 220 people.
One of the provinces hit by the storm in the central Philippines recorded its first death from Typhoon Fung-wong.
Rescue team Juniel Tagarino in Catbalogan City told AFP that the body of a 64-year-old woman had been pulled from under rubble and fallen trees.
“Last night, the wind was very strong and the rain was heavy… According to his family, he probably forgot something and went back inside the house,” Tagarino said.
In Aurora, where the eye of the storm was expected to make landfall, government employee Aries Ora, said the rain was still light as he boarded up his home in the town of Dipaculao with steel sheets and wooden planks.
“What we are really afraid of is that landfall is expected to occur at night,” he said.
“Unlike previous typhoons, we will not be able to clearly see the wind movements and what is happening around us,” he said again.
Schools and government offices had been ordered closed Monday across the main island of Luzon, including the capital Manila, where nearly 300 flights had been cancelled.
Flood
By Sunday morning Catanduanes, a small island that the state meteorological agency said could take a “direct hit”, was already battered by wind and rain, with storm surge crashing into roads and floodwaters rising in some areas.
“As we speak, they are feeling the impact of the typhoon, especially in Catanduanes, because the center of the storm is closest there,” deputy civil defense administrator Rafaelito Alejandro told a news conference.
Video verified by AFP showed a church in the city submerged in flood waters that reached halfway up its driveway.
Flooding was also reported in the Bicol region of southern Luzon, explained Alejandro, who confirmed the preemptive evacuation of nearly 1.2 million people across the country.
In Guinobat, a city of about 80,000 people in Albay province, verified video showed streets turning into torrential flash floods.
Typhoon Fung-wong is expected to bring at least 200 millimeters (eight inches) of rain to many areas of the country, according to government meteorologists.
Scientists warn that hurricanes are becoming stronger due to climate change.Warmer oceans allow typhoons to strengthen quickly and a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, meaning heavier rainfall.
Days earlier, Typhoon Kalmaegi caused torrential flooding that passed through cities in the Cebu Islands and Negros, sweeping away cars, riverside shacks and containers.
The typhoon, the deadliest this year according to the EM-DAT disaster database, killed at least 224 people and left 109 missing, according to government data updated on Sunday morning.
Search and rescue efforts in Cebu were suspended on Saturday due to safety concerns due to the approach of the super typhoon.
