The incident occurred when the midterm exam on October 15 was conducted online, and students were required to record their computer screens, hands and faces during the exam to prevent cheating.
However, the lecturer said “many cases of cheating were discovered” and detected in post-exam video audits.
Some students manipulated the camera position or copied exam questions into ChatGPT to get answers.
In 2024, the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training conducted a survey of 726 campus students who had experience using AI.
As many as 91.7 percent of responses admitted to using AI for tasks such as academic writing.
“People around me use Chat GPT or Gemini for campus assignments or studying college material,” said a student in Seoul to The Korea Herald.
“It feels stupid not to use AI, because my friends can complete the task in a few hours, but I have to do it all day,” he added.
On Everytime, an online forum for Korean students, the topic of using AI for online assignments or exams is a common topic of conversation.
“I copied the exam questions into Chat GPT, and most of the answers were correct. I really feel like I wasted my time trying to answer them myself,” wrote one student on the forum.
According to the Korean Council for University Education, as many as 77.1 percent of 131 campuses do not have official rules for using AI in the classroom.
Some universities that have AI regulations only ensure that “facts remain accurate when using AI” or “follow lecturers’ directions regarding its use.”
Yonsei University also has rules, but a campus official said they “can’t do much” to prevent students from using AI.
Experts believe that campuses should make clear rules about the use of AI and teach students to think critically.
“The best way is still to allow AI, but students must write sources and explain their reasons for using AI to answer questions,” said Head of the AI ​​Safety Institute, Dr.Kim Myuhng-joo, to The Korea Herald.
Dr Kim also said that learning and assessment systems need to be changed so that they are not inferior to AI, for example by requiring live presentations or discussions in class.
