Ancient volcano in
Ethiopia
erupted on Monday (24/11), after 12 thousand years of ‘sleeping’ or experiencing a dormant period.
The eruption of Mount Hayli Gubbi ejected volcanic ash as high as 14 kilometers into the atmosphere, according to a statement from the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC).

The ancient volcano is located in Afar Province, Ethiopia, about 800 kilometers from the country’s capital, Addis Ababa.
The 500 meter high mountain is in the Rift valley where two tectonic plates meet.
VAAC stated that the eruption of volcanic ash from Mount Hayli Gubbi reached Yemen, Oman, India and northern Pakistan.
The Simthsonian Institute for Global Volcanic Activity Program says that Hayli Gubbi has not erupted since the Holocene period which began 12 thousand years ago at the end of the ice age.
Volcanologist and Michigan Technological University professor Simon Carn confirmed on Bluesky that Hayli Gubbi “has no history of Holocene eruptions,” quoted from
