“We want to provide many investment opportunities for investors, while maintaining financial strength. So through these options and tools, we ensure we are ready for funding in a very safe way,” said Goto as reported
CNBC.
A source said Softbank released all its shares in Nvidia because it wanted to focus on investing in the company that made ChatGPT, OpenAI.
“All of these are sources of funds that will be used to finance a US$22.5 billion investment in OpenAI,” said a source familiar with the matter.
Vision Fund, a subsidiary of Softbank, is quite aggressive in encouraging investment in the artificial intelligence business chain, including Open AI, whose valuation has reached US$500 billion.
After SoftBank’s recapitalization and investment of US$22.5 billion, the Japanese company’s stake in OpenAI will increase from 4 percent to 11 percent.
Another source added that the proceeds from the sale of shares in the US chip company will also be used to finance other projects currently being undertaken, one of which is the acquisition of ABB’s robotics unit.
Equity Research Analyst at New Street Research Rolf Bulk revealed that Softbank does need large funds for investment until the end of the year. The value even exceeds the investments made over the last two years.
“We don’t think this should be seen as a cautious or negative stance towards Nvidia, but in the context of SoftBank needing at least US$30.5 billion in capital to invest in the October-December quarter, including US$22.5 billion for OpenAI and US$6.5 billion for Ampere,” Bulk said.
