Land
an area of 10 x 12 meters in the backyard was transformed into a laboratory for Almontana Stefanus Maesa Paat to experiment with farming
coffee
with various cultivation techniques.There’s robusta,
arabica
to Liberica.
“I plant various types of coffee here. If the results are good, they can be applied to coffee farmers,” said Monci, Almontana’s nickname, Tuesday (25/11).
Monci opened the Elmonts Coffee Tomohon business on Jalan Kolongan Satu, Tomohan Tengah, Tomohon City, North Sulawesi (Sulut), in 2017.

It all started because of his love of drinking coffee. This hobby then attracted him to pursue coffee until he finally opened it
coffee shop.
However, the business is constrained by supply.Because, there are not many coffee farmers in Tomohon, North Sulawesi (Sulut). If there is, the next challenge is getting good quality coffee beans.
“My initial goal was just to create a coffee ecosystem. Because only by having an ecosystem, this coffee business can run. Farmers can supply their coffee. When they produce a lot, they already know who to take it downstream to,” said Monci.
In 2019, he heard that Bank Indonesia was opening coffee farmer training through the North Sulawesi Leading Farmer (Patua) program and enrolled in the first batch.
The majority of Patua participants are horticulture farmers such as onions, chilies and tomatoes.Only three people, including Monci, have coffee farming backgrounds.
“We learn about fertilizer needs and the pest control cycle,” he said.
Because Monci also runs a coffee shop business, he also registered for the North Sulawesi Leading Entrepreneur (Wanua) program to accommodate MSMEs.
“I took part in two training courses. After graduating from agriculture, I went straight to MSMEs,” he said.
Through the Wanua program, he learned many things about business management, including determining the cost of goods sold (HPP), margins and business legality. For promotions, Wanua participants are also provided with marketing knowledge.
“In digital marketing, we learn SEO. Precisely because of the program from the start, we didn’t use signposts, place advertisements or anything else. We only used Google Business, Instagram and Facebook,” said Monci.
“The benefits are extraordinary, we have felt the impact, until now most of our reviewers are foreigners, people from abroad who can find out here from digital marketing,” he added.
Now the aroma of local Tomohon coffee from the cafe has spread to Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, France and Greece. What makes the coffee special is the palm ‘hint’ in the aroma and taste.Monci said, this was because Tomohon agricultural land used to be planted with palm oil.
The coffee sold by Elmonts Coffee Tomohon comes from local farmers who are members of the Tuur Ma’asering farmer group (Poktan). There are 29 farmers as members. To encourage them, Monci buys coffee beans from farmers at national standard prices.
Monci also teaches farmers how to produce good coffee beans, from picking, harvesting, drying to sorting.
Last Tuesday, BI also provided infrastructure support (sarpras) for coffee farmers who are members of the Tuur Ma’asering Poktan.
Deputy Head of the North Sulawesi Province Bank Indonesia Representative Office, Renold Asri, handed over support to the Regional Economic and Financial Policy Implementation Program (PI-KEKDA) at Elmonts Coffee. Some of them include production houses and agricultural equipment to support the performance of coffee making from upstream to downstream.
In the future, he hopes that the presence of coffee farmers in North Sulawesi will increase and produce high quality coffee. It is hoped that coffee can become a characteristic of Tomohon to attract tourists to come.
“Bank Indonesia hopes that this coffee can become one of North Sulawesi’s leading commodities,” he concluded.
