Following are the irregularities in the seven apartments that caught fire.
1. Polystyrene
Director of the Fire Department, Andy Yeung, said that during the rescue operation, the team found several sheets of polystyrene board covering the windows in a number of apartments.
“These polystyrene boards are very flammable and make the fire spread very quickly,” Yeung was quoted as saying

“The presence of these boards is unusual, so we have handed over these findings to the police for further investigation,” he added.
2. Bamboo scaffolding
Apart from polystyrene boards, the authorities also found a lot of bamboo scaffolding which was used to cover part of the side of the building which was being renovated.
Bamboo scaffolding is a temporary structure made of bamboo to support workers and materials during construction.
The buildings in the apartment complex are undergoing a series of extensive renovations.
The authorities also suspect that the bamboo scaffolding was one of the causes of this worst fire.
The flames first appeared on bamboo scaffolding covering several apartment blocks.
A reporter
AFP
heard a loud cracking sound, which probably came from burning bamboo. He also saw thick smoke rising from buildings as flames appeared to tower high.
Meanwhile, the city’s housing authority will check whether the protective coating used to cover the buildings during the renovation process has adequate fire resistance.
“We will seek accountability in accordance with applicable laws and regulations,” said Hong Kong leader John Lee.
