Mamdani will be appointed Mayor of New York in January next year.He will be the first Muslim mayor of New York and the first of Indian descent in history.
During the campaign, even during his victory speech, Mamdani showed a conflicting attitude towards Trump, who had recently served as president for a second term.
Even though he has been back in the seat of power for less than a year, Trump has expressed signs of returning to fight in the United States presidential election in 2028.
So can Mamdani also run for president in the 2028 election year?
Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18 1991. Then, his family moved to Cape Town, South Africa when he was five years old.
His mother comes from India and works as a filmmaker, Mira Nair.Nair converted to Hinduism.Meanwhile, his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is an academic who focuses on postcolonial studies and is Muslim.
Mamdani and his family moved to New York, when he was seven years old.If accumulated, he has lived in the United States for 27 years.
He only obtained US citizenship through naturalization in 2018 or seven years ago.
Two years later, Mamdani was elected to the New York State Assembly. At that time, there were still many who did not know who Mamdani was and what his track record was.
This series of backgrounds cannot make Mamdani register as a US presidential candidate in the next election.
According to the US constitution, the presidential requirement is a citizen who has lived in America for 14 years, is at least 35 years old, and was born in the US.
“No Person, except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, shall at the time of the ratification of this Constitution, be eligible to occupy the Office of President; nor shall any Person be eligible for that Office if he has not attained the Age of thirty-five Years, and has been a Resident for fourteen Years of the United States,” reads the succession clause for the presidency of article II, quoted

.
According to this clause, age is determined because presidential candidates must have sufficient maturity in carrying out their public roles. In his comments regarding the US constitution, Judge Joseph Story once touched on the issue of age limits.
“Considering the nature of the duties, the breadth of information, and the robust wisdom and experience required in the executive department, no one can doubt the appropriateness of certain age qualifications,” Story said.
Then the requirement for US-born citizens, the framers of the constitution wanted to ensure that the president’s loyalty rested entirely with the United States.
Story said that by barring naturalized citizens from holding the office of president, the requirement to be a native-born citizen could protect the United States from ambitious individuals.
“People who might be interested in taking office, and creating corrupt interference by foreign governments in executive elections, have the most serious impact,” he said.
