Chairman of the PSSI Referee Committee, Yoshimi Ogawa explained the reasons for announcing the Japanese referee,
Yudai Yamamoto
as a permanent foreign referee in the 2025/2026 Super League.
Ogawa ensured that his party chose based on an objective assessment, even though they both came from Japan.Apart from Yamamoto, there are referees from other countries such as Singapore and Uzbekistan.
“It’s true that we invited foreign referees from other countries. They still have FIFA referee status and are busy leading the AFC and FIFA tournaments as well as their own leagues,” said Ogawa in Jakarta, Monday (22/12).

“That’s the reason we asked [Yamamoto] to be the permanent referee because he had to take off their FIFA badge,” explained the man from Japan.
Ogawa said that Yamamoto is a high quality referee.Experience since 2008 and obtaining a FIFA license in 2011 is the benchmark.Yamamoto also served in League 1 2017.
“In 2008 he was promoted to Class 1 referee for the Japanese League and was registered as a FIFA referee in 2011. He has also been a professional JFA referee since 2015, but left Japan and settled in Indonesia,” said Ogawa.
Yamamoto is effectively a permanent referee in the 2025/2026 Super League as of January 1 2026. He will be on duty in the second round and is projected to be in the first round of the 2026/2027 Super League.
Yamamoto emphasized that he would serve as best as possible in Indonesia. He even intends to continue honing his Indonesian language skills, including harsh words.
“As a referee, of course if you say inappropriate words you have the potential to be punished. From me, it is a must to learn Indonesian to maintain order,” he said.
