“Because we know that some time ago there was an incident, for example a calf that died due to the EEHV virus (
Elephent Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus
) we will prevent that,” he added.
Satyawan explained that this collaboration was a follow-up to Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni’s direction after a Sumatran elephant named Laila died at the Sebanga Elephant Conservation Center (PKG), Bengkalis, Riau due to the EEHV virus.
At that time, the Minister of Forestry asked for help from Fauna Land Indonesia to bring in an elephant doctor from Vantara in India.Vantara is a giant wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India with one of the most advanced Elephant Hospitals in the world
“I have contacted a friend in India who can find the antivirus. It’s just a matter of studying whether it is suitable for our elephants or not. But now there has been progress. They even want to give it away for free if it is suitable for our elephants. There is just one more research step left,” said the Minister of Forestry.
Satyawan explained that preventing elephant deaths due to EEHV infection requires adequate knowledge and skills, especially in detecting symptoms early.
With this collaboration, it is hoped that it will also be possible to save the Sumatran elephant population which is not only threatened by the loss of their ecosystem home, but also by the threat of EEHV.
“We are collaborating with our partners from abroad to come together. Creating peaceline data for elephants here, and of course also capacity building for mahut (elephant handlers),” he said..
Although this collaboration started in Buluh Cina, preventive efforts will also reach all elephant pockets in Tesso Nilo National Park, Sebanga, Waykambas and other locations.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Fauna Land Indonesia, Danny Gunalen, said that his party, as Vantara’s representative in Indonesia, is ready to support the government in surveying and handling the health of elephants at the Buluh Cina TWA.
“We from Fauna Land can help the ministry to survey elephants at TWA Buluh Cina. Coincidentally, we are partnering with Vantara from India. They are one of the largest elephant rescue centers in the world, and have the largest elephant hospital in the world,” he explained.
He added that a team of elephant specialist doctors from India had carried out an initial diagnosis, studying the health condition and welfare of elephants at that location, especially after the outbreak of herpes.
“They have expert doctors who are currently taking part in surveying this location where some time ago there was an outbreak of Herpes disease, we have looked at the diagnosis, studied the condition and well-being of this elephant, and we will take the next steps, preventive medical measurements and this will be done periodically. We will implement it to avoid any more deaths,” he concluded.
