Secretary General of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP)
Hasto Kristiyanto
said his party would review the proposal
The regional head is elected by the DPRD
taking into account the aspirations of the people and constitutional aspects.
“PDI Perjuangan continues to carry out studies. In principle, the system always contains pluses and minuses. We look for which ones bring benefits to the people,” said Hasto in response to journalists’ questions in Bandung, West Java, Sunday (7/12).
According to Hasto, PDIP is reviewing the regional head election system, whether elected by the people directly or through the DPRD to ensure the election system is beneficial for strengthening democracy and leadership legitimacy.

Hasto further said that regardless of the electoral system, he views that the most important thing is that regional heads are able to produce political decisions in order to accelerate economic growth, overcome poverty, as well as various forms of inequality and injustice.
“But the most important thing is that regional leaders are able to produce political decisions to accelerate economic growth, overcome poverty, inequality and various forms of injustice,” he said.
In reviewing the proposal, PDIP will consider the people’s hopes and the aspects regulated in the constitution.
“The spiritual atmosphere when the constitution mandates that regional heads and deputy regional heads be elected democratically through a fair election, now this is what we will then open together, we will study, but the most important thing is the benefits for improving the quality of democracy,” he said.
He also said that the direct election of regional heads by the people was actually carried out because the five-year term required a basis of legitimacy and strong support from the people.
Nevertheless, Hasto admitted that he could understand the emergence of proposals for regional heads to be elected by the DPRD.This proposal was put forward by the General Chair of the Golkar Party, Bahlil Lahadalia, which was then considered by President Prabowo Subianto.
“We also do not close our eyes to what President Prabowo said, because direct elections cause huge costs, campaign costs, fundraising costs, political communication costs, which causes many regional heads to be trapped in problems related to corruption,” he said.
“This is a reason that we caught. Well, of course, we will study all of this at the upcoming national working meeting,” said Hasto.
Hasto stated that the PDI Perjuangan’s position would later be discussed at a national working meeting to be held early next year.
Previously, the General Chair of the Golkar Party, Bahlil Lahadalia, at the peak of Golkar’s 61st Birthday, Friday (5/12), proposed that regional heads be re-elected through the DPRD.
“Specifically regarding the Pilkada, a year ago we said that if possible, the Pilkada would be elected only through the DPRD. There are many pros and cons, but after we studied it, it would be better if we did it according to the election through the Regency/City DPR so that we don’t have any more headaches,” said Bahlil at Istora Senayan, Jakarta.
President Prabowo, who was also present on the occasion, welcomed Bahlil’s proposal.According to the President, democracy must be designed to reduce political costs so that elections are not determined only by people with money.
“If you have already chosen the district DPRD, provincial DPRD, why not just immediately elect the governor and regent, that’s it,” said the Head of State.
