A fire engulfed an apartment building complex in Wang Fuk Court, Tai Po, northern Hong Kong for 10 hours on Wednesday.As a result of the fire, 44 died, 45 people were in critical condition, 279 were still missing, and 900 others were displaced.
The incident was one of the deadliest fires in decades in Hong Kong, a region with some of the world’s tallest and most densely populated apartment blocks.
When the fire occurred, a number of buildings were being renovated and there was a lot of bamboo scaffolding as part of the construction.
Until now the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
According to the initial investigation, officers found styrofoam inside the building.
Authorities said the styrofoam caused the fire to spread more quickly within the block and burned apartments through the corridors.
Responding to this devastating fire, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences.He also called for “all-out efforts” to minimize casualties and losses.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu promised to investigate the fire and the bamboo scaffolding which was also suspected to be the cause of the fire.
