and severe landslides in three provinces in Sumatra–Aceh, West Sumatra (Sumbar), and North Sumatra (North Sumatra).
Sonny made this proposal at the DPR Commission IV working meeting with Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni, Thursday (4/12).
Sonny admitted that he was worried that similar disaster cases in Sumatra would happen again.

According to him, the special committee is important to improve and reform forestry governance.
“I think it’s because I myself am worried that disasters like this will happen, and I see that the potential is there, so reforming forestry governance is an important thing,” said Sonny.
“And to encourage that, ask for permission from the leadership, we propose that there be a special committee regarding land conversion,” he added.
According to Sonny, the current government must mobilize all its forces to improve the situation following the disaster in Sumatra.Because, he said, tactical answers are not enough to evaluate the current impact.
“Yesterday it was said, ‘Oh, that can’t be because of illegal logging’, which might just be rotting wood, ‘which happens a lot of illegal logging in Eastern Indonesia’,” said Sonny.
“Show us, does it mean it’s worse in Eastern Indonesia?”he added.
Sonny on that occasion also asked the Ministry of Finance to improve the governance of forest utilization permits.Apart from that, he also asked the government to start prioritizing conservation areas and protected forests.
Then, Sonny also encouraged policy integration in the forestry sector to reduce disaster risks.So far, he believes that the different bureaucratic systems between forestry and the environment are just troublesome.
“But of course there is another argument, when those who give permission and those who supervise in one place are also unattractive, there will be a lot of leaks,” he said.
