, Pakistani government and military officials have not commented on the attack.
Meanwhile, so far no militant group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack in Pakistan yesterday. However, state broadcaster PTV reported that the perpetrators were Afghan citizens.
Pakistani President Asif Zardari blamed “foreign-backed Fitna al-Khawarij” for behind the suicide attack.Fitna al-Khawarij is the term Islamabad uses to refer to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants accused of operating from Afghan territory.
Another suicide attack in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, also occurred earlier this month, killing 12 people. This attack was claimed by a faction of the Pakistani Taliban which adheres to a similar ideology to the Afghan Taliban.
Islamabad blamed a militant cell it said was “guided every step of the way by the Afghanistan-based high command” for the attack on the capital.
This attack also comes at a time when relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been tense since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Relations between the two neighboring countries also worsened after deadly border clashes last October that killed around 70 people on both sides.
The fighting ended with a ceasefire brokered by Qatar and Türkiye, but follow-up talks in Istanbul failed to produce a long-term agreement, especially as security issues became a dead end.
Islamabad accuses the Taliban of harboring militants, including the TTP, who have for years waged a bloody campaign against Pakistan.
Kabul denies these accusations and accuses Pakistan of harboring groups hostile to Afghanistan and not respecting its sovereignty.
