The Mayor of New York City is elected
Zohran Mamdani
resigned after his past tweet went viral.
The tweets were made in 2011-2014 and contain antisemitism because they comment on Jewish people.

, Catherine Almonte Da Costa resigned from her position as director of appointments due to public criticism of her antisemitic tweets and comments.Da Costa even though Mamdani was only appointed last Wednesday (17/12).

“I spoke to the Mayor this afternoon, apologized, and expressed my deep regret for my past statements. These statements do not reflect who I really am. As the mother of Jewish children, I feel deep sadness and regret for the harm caused by these words,” Da Costa said in a statement.
“Because this has diverted public attention from the work I am currently undertaking, I have submitted my letter of resignation,” he continued.

In its report, the bulletin revealed various tweets by Da Costa on X (formerly Twitter) since 2011 that commented on Jews.One of them concerns his views on orthodox Jewish women who do not show their hair.
“I always thought orthodox Jewish women were strange because they couldn’t show their hair so they wore wigs. I thought it was better than wearing a scarf,” she wrote in 2012.
Da Costa’s position in Mamdani’s government is responsible for recruitment in the mayor’s incoming government.Da Costa has years of government experience, including a stint in former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s recruiting office.
Da Costa is a Dominican immigrant who grew up in Queens.
Mamdani has opened his mouth about the commotion his men made.
“Catherine has expressed her deep regret for her past statements and has decided to resign. I accept that,” said Mamdani in an official statement from her office.
This case made a number of New York politicians question the selection process carried out by Mamdani and his team to fill the next government.The reason is, Da Costa’s tweet was revealed not long after his appointment was announced.
So far Mamdani has only appointed one deputy mayor and has not appointed another commissioner apart from retaining the position of current Police Commissioner, Jessica Tisch.
Now, Mamdani has a new challenge to convince key leaders of New York’s Jewish community that he neither ignores Jews nor supports antisemitism.
