Rain itself is predicted to continue to fall in a number of areas in Sri Lanka. The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said heavy rain could further wet the hills and make them unstable.
“Because rainfall in the last 24 hours has exceeded 150 millimeters, if the rain continues, immediately evacuate to a safe location to avoid the risk of landslides,” said NBRO, in a statement.
The latest flooding was caused by the arrival of monsoon rains.Meanwhile, some of the floods that occurred last week have begun to subside.
The Sri Lankan region itself was just hit by the Ditwah cyclone at the end of last November.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at that time declared an emergency status on Saturday (29/1), to request international assistance.
The storm was Sri Lanka’s deadliest natural disaster since 2017, when floods and landslides killed more than 200 people.
