“The National Conscience Movement considers this humanitarian tragedy which has caused casualties and paralysis of social and economic activities in many areas on the island of Sumatra, to be declared a National Disaster,” wrote the NAM in its statement, Thursday (4/12).
NAM urges the government to take quick and integrated steps in handling emergencies.
“And the handling must be carried out comprehensively and centrally. Mobilization of national resources must be immediately mobilized optimally amidst the limited resources of regional governments,” he said.
Apart from that, NAM also asked the government to tighten policies and regulations related to environmental sustainability.
NAM also appealed to all Indonesian citizens to carry out humanitarian solidarity.Real actions to ease the burden on those affected and strengthen the unity of the nation’s children.
“Because this disaster is not impossible due to violations of environmental regulations driven by human greed,” he said.
Flash floods and landslides hit a number of areas in North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh.
As of Thursday (4/12), the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that the disaster had caused 776 deaths and 564 people were still being searched for.
However, until now the government has not yet declared a national disaster emergency status.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture (PMK), Pratikno, said that although it has not been declared a national disaster, disaster management has been carried out nationally.
He explained that all ministries/institutions had been ordered by President Prabowo to mobilize maximum resources.
“All ministries/institutions were ordered by the President, including the TNI-Polri, BNPB and all components to mobilize their resources as fully as possible to deal with the disaster in Sumatra. So once again the handling is really full force handling nationally,” said Pratikno at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Wednesday (3/12).
