Carlos Manzo was arrested as a suspect in the politician’s murder.This arrest was announced by the local prosecutor’s office and sparked a stir in the country.
The prosecutor’s office said Friday that the guards, who are active police officers, were detained as part of an investigation into possible involvement in the premeditated murder crime against Carlos Manzo.
The mayor of Uruapan was murdered in front of his own family on November 1 in broad daylight.The alleged perpetrator, who was 17 years old, died at the hands of Manzo’s bodyguard.Local and federal authorities suspect that organized crime is behind the killings.

The incident sparked anti-government protests and led to the reinforcement of federal troops in Michoacan, a crime-ridden state in western Mexico.
Manzo, who has been mayor of Uruapan for little more than a year, is known for his popularity as a fighter against organized crime and drug cartels in the troubled state.
Until the arrest of the suspects, the seven guards remained active and were tasked with protecting Manzo’s widow, Grecia Quiroz, who was appointed by state Congress to replace her husband as mayor of Uruapan.
Arrest of the ‘Mastermind’ of the Murder
On Wednesday (11/19), federal authorities announced the arrest of Jorge Armando “N,” also known as ”
El Licenciado
,” and named him “as one of the masterminds” in Manzo’s murder.
The Federal Security Secretariat said El Licenciado was the leader of an unknown criminal cell that, according to local media, is believed to be the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (

The arrest of the guards occurred in a raid on Friday (21/11) afternoon in Uruapan by agents from the local prosecutor’s office, supported by military personnel and federal guards.The suspects were then transferred to prison to appear before a judge.
The mayor’s assassination has added pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum to overhaul her security strategy.Sheinbaum has since announced ”
