was taken into federal police custody on Saturday, according to reports

, which has confirmed the politician’s lawyer.
The move also ends months of house arrest pending an appeal of Brazil’s Supreme Court verdict regarding the attack on Brazil’s democracy.
Bolsonaro’s lawyer did not give a specific reason for the detention.However, a person familiar with the matter said that this detention was a precautionary measure related to his house arrest requirements.

Brazil’s right-wing leader was sentenced last September to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 general election to left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro was identified as the leader and beneficiary of the scheme to prevent Lula from serving as President of Brazil in 2023.
For more than 100 days, Bolsonaro has been under strict house arrest for violating preventive measures in separate cases.
The separate case is related to Bolsonaro’s alleged efforts to seek United States (US) intervention to stop the criminal case against him.
Reaction from the US
US President Donald Trump, who was known to have had a good relationship with Bolsonaro while both were in office, called the detention case a “witch hunt” (
witch hunt
).
Trump also briefly imposed sanctions on Moraes, the judge overseeing Bolsonaro’s case, and imposed 50 percent tariffs on US imports of some Brazilian goods, although he began lifting those tariffs this month.
During house arrest, Bolsonaro was banned from using social media but received visits from his political allies.His lawyers are expected to seek permission for Bolsonaro to remain under house arrest, citing several health problems.
