sentenced an elderly woman to one year in prison who hid her daughter’s body for almost 20 years in a freezer.
76-year-old Keiko Mori was arrested last September after admitting to hiding her daughter’s body in a refrigerator at her home in Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo.

Her daughter, Makiko, was 29 years old when she died.When found, Makiko’s body was already rotting.
The Mito district court handed down the sentence on Thursday (18/12), after the public prosecutor asked for a one-year prison sentence.This sentence was relatively light after the court found mitigating factors.

, Judge Shizuka Asakura said Mori initially kept her daughter’s body in a cupboard at her home.However, he then moved Makiko’s body into the freezer in the kitchen after the body began to rot.
Mori told investigators that the smell from the body had filled the house so he bought a freezer and stored his daughter’s body.
Investigators who went to Mori’s house found the body wearing a t-shirt and underwear in a kneeling position, with its face facing down in the freezer.
Mori admitted to keeping the body there since 2005.He said his daughter was a drug addict and physically violent towards her parents.
Makiko was killed by her father, Mori’s husband, who died in September.The husband initially intended to report the murder to the police, but was stopped by Mori.
Since then, Mori has been forced to hide her husband’s crimes.However, this action actually caused him to commit a serious violation.
The investigation’s verdict stated that hiding bodies for a long time seriously violated religious and moral norms of society.
