Minister of Trade (Mendag)
Budi Santoso
mentions price increases
chili
and shallots which occur in a number of areas before Christmas and New Year (
Nataru
) is still within reasonable limits.
In fact, for chilies, the price currently exceeds the government reference price (HAP) in the field.
According to Budi, this pattern of increase often occurs at the end of every year and is influenced by weather conditions.

“The price of chilies yesterday was like yesterday in Pontianak. For chilies, it was (HAP) IDR 55 thousand, the same as IDR 57 thousand for large red chilies. Not (up to) double (the increase). Yesterday in Pontianak it was IDR 67 thousand, an increase of IDR 10 thousand,” said Budi when met at the Ministry of Trade Office, Central Jakarta, Friday (12/12).
Budi explained that the Indonesian Chili Champions Association (ACCI) report showed that chili stocks were actually sufficient, but the harvest was disrupted due to continuous rain.
“He (Champion) said that production was sufficient and he said that almost every end of the year it’s always like this (chili prices are high),” said Budi.
This condition is different from last year, when chili production was depressed due to plant disease which caused many plants to fall. This year, said Budi, production is generally sufficient, but the weather means the harvest cannot be carried out optimally.
Meanwhile, for shallots, Budi said prices in the field were still under control.
“Yesterday’s onions in Pontianak were normal, the production of onions was sufficient. Only Rp. 20 thousand onions in Pontianak, then there were Rp. 38 thousand, maybe the grade was different. But the reference price for shallots was Rp. 41,500, so it was still below that, so it’s good, it’s under control,” he said.
Budi will also directly review prices in other areas that have high food needs ahead of Christmas.
“Next week I’m going to Kupang, Kupang, maybe my friends there are celebrating Christmas. We checked Pontianak yesterday too for Christmas,” he explained.
BPS noted that price spikes for a number of food commodities occurred in many regions in the first week of December 2025.
The increase in shallot prices is now occurring in 276 districts/cities, an increase from 216 regions the previous week.Nationally, the average price of shallots reaches IDR 45,163 per kg, which is above the HAP.
The price of cayenne pepper has also jumped significantly. The areas affected by the increase jumped from 98 to 261 districts/cities.
The national average price for chilies is now at IDR 60,861 per kg, also above the HAP.In some areas, the price of cayenne pepper even reaches IDR 200 thousand per kg.
