“We have treated around 1000 people. But we see that there is still a lot that needs to be done, (refugees who need to be treated) I think hundreds of thousands,” said Patrick after picking up the second wave of aid from Malaysia at Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport, Aceh, Wednesday (10/12) evening.
He admitted that while handling refugees in Aceh, he saw that the types of illnesses that were often encountered were fever, cough, skin disease and other minor illnesses.
“Usually fever, cough. There are a lot of skin diseases, but that’s only the first line, we’re not getting to the second line now,” he said.
Minimal medical posts
Meanwhile, a resident of Seruway District, Aceh Tamiang Regency Andika admitted that he was forced to take his sick family to the Aceh Tamiang Regional Hospital on foot because there was no health post there.
He traveled on foot for about 4 hours on muddy roads and wooden materials carried away by the flood currents.
“There is no (health post) yet. Don’t worry, the logistics are difficult, that’s why residents here go to Kuala Simpang (the capital of Aceh Tamiang) waiting for help on the side of the road. Because they can’t get in here yet,” said Andika when contacted from Banda Aceh, Thursday (11/12).
According to him, many children and adults there are starting to get sick without any treatment. He said that the death toll there had the potential to increase because residents were starting to starve and become sick.
“It’s not potential anymore, but people are already starving, while many health posts have been set up around Kuala Simpang,” he said.
