Previously, 303 school students and 12 teachers were kidnapped by armed groups during an attack on Friday (21/11) at St Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State, north-central Nigeria. This is one of the biggest kidnapping cases in the country.
The number of students kidnapped was almost half of the school’s total number of 629 students. Those kidnapped were aged between eight and 18 years.
Until now there has been no explanation from the Nigerian government regarding the number of students and teachers who were kidnapped.
“While we welcome the return of the 50 children who managed to escape with a sense of relief, I invite us all to continue praying so that the other victims can be rescued quickly and return safely,” said CAN Chairman in Niger State, Pastor Bulus Dauwa Yohanna.
The kidnapping came just days after a similar incident on Monday (17/11), when armed groups attacked a secondary school in neighboring Kebbi state and kidnapped 25 students.
The wave of violence has raised security concerns in Africa’s most populous country and prompted school closures in many regions.
