He was inaugurated as king through the Jumenengan Dalem Nata Binayangkare ceremony.The traditional ceremony was held to announce Hamangkunegoro as heir to the throne of the Surakarta Palace to replace his father, Pakubuwana XIII, who died on Sunday (2/11).
Purbaya himself officially ascended the throne of the Surakarta Palace shortly before the body of Pakubuwana XIII was departed for Pajimatan Imogiri, Bantul DI Yogyakarta, Wednesday (5/11).

Jumenengan begins with a special ceremony at Dalem Ageng Prabasuyasa which is located in the Kedhaton Complex.Dalem Ageng is one of the most sacred rooms in the Palace.

“(At Watu Gilang I declare that I will replace His Majesty King Pakoe Boewono XIII as Sri Susuhunan at the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace),” said Pakubuwana XIV Purbaya reading Sabda Dalem.
After reading the pledge, Pakubuwana XIV Purbaya sat on the dampar (throne).The Monggang gamelan immediately played in Sitihinggil, marking the appearance of a new king at the Surakarta Palace.
The ceremony ended with the Jumenengan carnival.Pakubuwana XIV Purbaya boarded the Kyai Grudha Kencana train.
The carnival was held around the Surakarta Palace.The Jumenengan carnival procession takes the route usually used during the one sura night carnival.
“Today the palace is entering a new chapter full of hope. The word of Dalem delivered at Watu Gilang is not only a leadership pledge, but also a historical blessing that binds us all to preserve the culture of Mataram. This is not just succession, but the restoration of the dignity of the Surakarta Palace,” said Chairman of the Jumenengan Dalem Committee Nata Binayangkare SISKS Pakubuwana XIV Purbaya, GKR Timoer Rumbai in a press release.
Purbaya’s coronation was held amidst dualism in the leadership succession of the Surakarta Palace.
Apart from Purbaya, his older brother, KGPH Hangabehi alias Mangkubumi also claims to be the heir to the royal throne.Mangkubumi also called himself SISKS Pakubuwana XIV.
