confirmed that he would return to work on the Terminator franchise, after the excitement regarding Avatar: Fire and Ash which is currently being broadcast is over.However, he said Arnold Schwarzenegger would not join this time.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter that aired on December 17, 2025, Cameron said that there were many narrative problems that he had to solve in the new Terminator project.

“Once the Avatar situation settles down in the next few months, I’m going to really dive into it,” Cameron said.
“There are a lot of narrative problems to solve. The biggest one is how can I stay enough steps ahead of what’s actually happening to keep it science fiction?”
One of the things he wants to improve on the Terminator saga is regeneration.This is also the reason the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was not involved in it.

“I insisted Arnold should be in [2019’s] Terminator: Dark Fate, and it was a great ending to his role as the T-800.”
“There needs to be a broader interpretation of the Terminator and the idea of time warfare and super intelligence. I want to do new things that people have never imagined,” said James Cameron.
In 2017, James Camerin said he wanted to revisit the franchise he started in 1984 in the form of three series.
“So, I’m in discussions with David Ellison who holds the rights to Terminator globally, and the rights to that film in the United States market will revert to me under US law in a year and a half, so he and I are discussing what we can do,” Cameron said at the time.
“At the moment we tend to make it three series and connect each other,” Cameron said.
In September 2024, James Cameron admitted that he cringed when he looked back at The Terminator (1984), although he was also reluctant to call the legendary film flawed.
“I look at it now and there are parts of the film that are quite ridiculous, and other parts that are like ‘yeah, we did OK for the resources at the time,'” he continued.
James Cameron emphasized that his amusement was in the production value aspect of The Terminator, not in the dialogue which he still defends to this day.In fact, the dialogue in the film attracted quite a lot of side comments.
“I’m not amused at the dialogue at all, but I’m less amused than, it seems, than most people are about the dialogue I write,” Cameron said.
“You know what? Let me look at three of your four highest-grossing films, then we’ll talk about the effectiveness of the dialogue,” said Cameron, boasting of his own achievements.
