The Indonesian National Rowing Team is targeting four gold medals in
SEA Games 2025
in Thailand, according to the results of a joint evaluation with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora).
Indonesian national rowing team coach Muhammad Hadris emphasized that this target was realistic after reviewing the performance of male athletes who are still the main strength of the Red and White, as well as evaluating the results of the Asian Championships in Vietnam on October 16-19.
“Our target is four gold medals, according to the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ review. In men’s, all the numbers we are aiming for gold are still on track,” said Hadris quoted from Antara, Monday (24/11).

Hadris said the results of the 2025 Asian Rowing Championship were the main evaluation material ahead of the SEA Games. In the men’s sector, Indonesia is still significantly ahead compared to other Southeast Asian countries.
“For men, the distance is far. We see that other countries, especially Thailand, seem to have their own strategy in Vietnam by fielding different compositions. But so far the athletes have been the same, so we know their level,” he said.
A different situation occurred in the women’s number.Indonesia only lost slightly to Vietnam in several numbers, but in other numbers the time difference was still quite large.
“In women there is a difference of one second, there is three seconds. That is realistic to chase. But there are also 10 to 15 seconds, which is clearly difficult in two months,” explained Hadris.
For this reason, Hadris expressed the need for a special strategy to raise the performance of the women’s sector closer to the gold standard of the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines when Indonesia last won gold in the women’s number through Julianti and Yayah Rokayah in the pairs number.
“We are focused on narrowing the margin. At least even if we lose, don’t leave it for 1-2 seconds. All improvements must be visible before departure,” he said.
One new challenge emerged from the rules of the Thailand SEA Games committee which only opened the arena two days before the competition. This policy made Indonesia’s plan to arrive earlier impossible.
“We wanted to be there on December 8. But the venue only opened two days before the match. So at the earliest we can start adapting to the water on the 10th or 11th,” said Haderis.
This condition means that the finalization program must be maximized at Situ Cipule, Karawang. The team has been undergoing acclimatization at Situ Cipule for a week to adjust from training in Pangalengan, which is a highland area, to a lowland area.
Indonesia brought 23 athletes, consisting of 13 men and 10 women, to appear in eight classic events and two beach sprint events.
Despite facing the challenges of rainy weather and restrictions on arena access, Hadris is optimistic that the target of four golds remains realistic.
“In Karawang we are 100 percent ready. We just have to finish the final in Thailand. Hopefully the men will maintain the golden tradition, and the women can catch up on the distance they have lost,” he said.
Rowing was last contested at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam. At that time, Indonesia was in second place in the medal standings with 8 gold and 6 silver, only 2 bronze behind the hosts who won the most medals. As for the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia, rowing will not be contested.
