The waters of the Sunda Strait also look friendly after the waves had been high a few days ago and made it difficult for ships to dock.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Jakarta Merak Toll Road is also running smoothly.Congestion occurred at the Cikupa Toll Gate, Tangerang Regency. The density is expected to occur because there are many private vehicles coming from the direction of Jakarta.
At the East Cilegon toll gate, there is a sign warning trucks crossing to Sumatra Island to use Palebuhan Ciwandan to anticipate congestion in Merak.
Along the way, apart from private vehicles, there are still many trucks carrying goods passing by.
Peak homecoming flow
PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry Persero (ASDP) estimates that the peak flow of passenger and vehicle movements during the 2025 Christmas holiday at Merak Port, Banten, will occur on 23 and 24 December 2025.
Main Director of ASDP Indonesia Ferry Heru Widodo said that his party had anticipated this surge by ensuring the readiness of the fleet and port infrastructure.
“The peak prediction is December 23 and 24. We are prepared and alert,” said Heru as quoted by Antara.
To reduce congestion, ASDP operates a total of 32 ships every day which have been declared seaworthy by the Ministry of Transportation. If there is a significant spike (peak season), ASDP is ready to increase the number of vessels operating.
Heru detailed the scheme for dividing ship operations into three service locations, namely nine ships at Ciwandan Port, six ships at BBJ Port (Bakauheni-Banten Jaya), and the remainder serving at Merak Port.
“For the route in Merak, we predict an increase in the number of service users of around 4.5 percent compared to the previous period. Meanwhile, nationally the predicted increase will reach 9.4 percent,” he explained.
Apart from focusing on smooth traffic flow, ASDP also pays serious attention to safety factors considering the potential for extreme weather anomalies in the Sunda Strait according to BMKG predictions.
As a mitigation measure, ASDP alerted two tugboats at each port. This tugboat is specially prepared for emergency conditions, such as towing or pushing a ship that is experiencing problems due to bad weather.
“Collaboration with BMKG, the police and KSOP is key. If the BMKG recommendation states that the weather is unsafe for sailing, we will comply because safety is the main thing that cannot be negotiated,” concluded Heru.
