Governor of Aceh
Muzakir Manaf
emphasized that regents or regional heads who are whiny and unable to handle flood disasters should resign.
“If there is a regent who is whiny and gives up in the face of this disaster, please resign or step down from office. We will replace him with another, who is ready to work for the people,” said Muzakir Manaf in East Aceh, Friday.
This statement was made by Mualem, as Muzakir is known, in response to a number of regional heads who expressed their inability to handle flood disasters in their areas.

According to Mualem, the current flood is not an ordinary disaster. The floods that hit Aceh were the second volume of the tsunami, because the impact and area affected were more severe than the 2004 tsunami.
“In the 2004 tsunami, the water only came for about two hours. However, in the flood disaster this time, the water inundated people’s houses for more than five days. This is extraordinary suffering for the people of Aceh,” he said.
Based on temporary data, he said, at least five areas in Aceh experienced flooding in the severe category, namely East Aceh Regency, Aceh Tamiang Regency, North Aceh Regency, parts of Bireuen Regency, and parts of Central Aceh Regency.
In these areas, thousands of houses were submerged, access to transportation was cut off, economic activity was paralyzed, and thousands of residents were forced to flee to safer places, there were even reports of deaths, people getting sick, and public facilities, such as hospitals, schools and bridges experiencing serious damage.
Mualem strictly ordered all levels of government at the lower levels, from sub-district heads to keuchik (village heads), to be proactive in disaster management.
“No sub-district head or sub-district head can just wait for instructions. Everyone must move, go to the field, ensure that people are helped, the public kitchen is running, aid arrives, and no one goes hungry,” he said.
Mualem reminded that no regional head should play it safe or be afraid to make decisions in the midst of an emergency.During a disaster situation, what is needed is courage, speed and care.
“Regional heads are elected by the people to work in even the most difficult conditions, not to complain. The people need leaders who stand at the forefront, not those who run away from responsibility,” he said.
Regarding health, Mualem said he had brought in doctors from Malaysia to help treat patients affected by the flood, especially victims with serious conditions and illnesses after the flood, such as infections, diarrhea, respiratory tract infections and skin diseases.
This step was taken considering that several health facilities in the affected areas experienced limited medical personnel, damage to infrastructure due to flooding, and a significant increase in the number of patients.
“We must not let our people fight alone. We must mobilize all resources, including medical personnel from abroad if needed,” said Mualem.
The Aceh government hopes that all elements of government, TNI-Polri, volunteers, health workers and the community can continue to work together in speeding up the evacuation process, distribution of aid, handling victims and recovery after the flood.
“The flood disaster, which is known as the second tsunami, is a strong warning that Aceh is still very vulnerable to natural disasters, both in terms of geography and infrastructure readiness and regional governance,” said Mualem.
