Responding to Prabowo’s statement, Member of Commission II DPR from Golkar, Ahmad Irawan, said that his party had supported the proposal from the start.Irawan views regional elections through the DPRD as a form of people’s sovereignty which is deemed to be constitutional.
“From the start, the Golkar Party has pushed for regional elections through the DPRD. Implementing regional elections through the DPRD is a form of implementing people’s sovereignty in a constitutional and democratic manner,” said Irawan when contacted, Sunday (7/12).
In fact, he encouraged regional elections through the DPRD to apply to all levels, including regents, mayors, especially governors.Because, so far the governor has only implemented the remaining policies of the city districts.
“All levels, especially the provincial level, only exercise residual authority. Because the broadest autonomy exists in districts/cities,” he said.
Irawan believes that the implementation of regional elections through the DPRD in the future will be different, even though this system was previously in effect and was abolished in the revision of the 2024 Regional Election Law.
He claimed that future regional elections through the DPRD would be more democratic and honest.
“Of course the system, stages and technical implementation will be different. The principles must be constitutional, democratic, honest, fair and transparent,” he said.

Meanwhile, DPR Commission II member from the PKS faction Mardani Ali Sera is considering regional elections via the DPRD only at the regency level.Meanwhile, for mayors, the regional elections are still directly elected.
According to him, regional elections through the DPRD for districts can be carried out to balance popularity and capacity.
“It’s more about balancing popularity with capacity,” said Mardani, Sunday.
Meanwhile, at the city level, regional elections are still directly elected by the community.Compared to the district level, he considers the democratic system in the city to be better.
According to him, direct regional elections are important to continue to implement because they have legitimacy and are not easy to reduce.Direct regional elections, according to Mardani, could produce pearls even if proposed by a small party.
“Direct regional elections have the advantage of strong legitimacy for regional heads. And they are difficult to reduce. Direct regional elections can bring out regional gems even if they come from small parties or NGOs. It is good for urban areas that direct regional elections remain. And in rural areas they can be considered through the DPRD. So there is asymmetry in regional elections,” he said.
Democratic response
Deputy Chairman of Commission II from the Democratic Faction, Dede Yusuf admitted that his party could not yet take a position on the proposal.He said that regional elections through the DPRD would be a discussion in the Election Bill.
“Currently we cannot comment because it is a discussion for later,” said Dede when contacted, Sunday (7/12).
