The issue of food security was one of the main highlights of the meeting. The latest G20 report notes that around 720 million people in the world are still experiencing hunger, showing the importance of concrete steps that can be implemented widely.
Airlangga explained that Gibran explained MBG as a real example of a policy that was able to move many sectors at once. This program is considered to be able to strengthen the use of local products, empower farmers and breeders, and expand economic activities through supply chains that touch various corners of Indonesia.
Apart from food, Gibran also raised the issue of disaster risk reduction.Indonesia, as an archipelagic country in the ring of fire, faces major challenges related to natural disasters, so resilient and adaptive development is an urgent need.
Gibran’s presence marked Indonesia’s involvement in the first day of the G20 event which was held for the first time on the African continent under the South African Presidency.
A total of 37 heads of state and government attended along with heads of international organizations, including the Secretary General of the UN, IMF and World Bank.
This year’s G20 Summit is divided into three main sessions. The first session discussed sustainable economics, the role of trade, finance, and debt issues in developing countries.
The second session focused on strengthening global resilience, including disasters, climate change, a just energy transition, and the food system.
Meanwhile, the third session highlighted decent work, artificial intelligence governance, and critical minerals that are of concern to Indonesia.
In the entire series of discussions, Gibran emphasized that access to nutritious food is the foundation of human development.Through MBG, the government hopes to strengthen the quality of human resources while encouraging national economic growth.
