The confusion and confusion between hallucinations and reality experienced by a mother with postpartum depression, aka postpartum depression, is the picture that is clearly presented by Lynne Ramsay in
Die My Love
.
This film, which is based on the novel of the same title by Ariana Harwicz with a script written by Ramsay and Walsh with Alice Birch, is intense, dark and full of discomfort.

Maybe that was Ramsay’s aim, namely to bring the audience into the head of a woman named Grace who was fragile, unstable and full of discomfort, who in this case was played well by Jennifer Lawrence.
Lawrence managed to channel confusion, anger, thirst for affection, and even destructive impulses with extraordinary acting courage. The feeling of confusion, fatigue, and being haunted by real and imagined biases even managed to come off the screen and be felt by me.
Ramsay’s efforts to describe how a woman experiences postpartum depression, which is often misunderstood in the real world, is worthy of appreciation.
However, unfortunately the drama of Grace’s background and the development of the characters in this film, especially around Grace, steal the focus from Ramsay’s initial goal.
With the life problems that Grace apparently already had before facing postpartum mental dysfunction, it seems like a justification for a woman’s problems.
This film depicts many crazy scenes of Grace behaving impulsively.Grace is portrayed like a wild animal free in her own home, creeping, angry and out of control.
Meanwhile, Robert Pattinson as Jackson appears as a husband who looks depressed due to his wife’s condition. In fact, Jackson had a hand in the chaotic situation that happened to Grace, and was not just a victim of circumstances.
This unequal role then describes Die My Love as increasingly placing Grace, who is a woman, as the problematic party in the chaos of her relationship with her partner.
Apart from the problem of inequality and the development of the story which makes me uneasy, a number of things in this story don’t seem to make sense to me.Like those who live as if in an era before electricity was discovered, even though they also use electronic household equipment.
This small detail is quite disturbing because it breaks the realism built by the film.Instead of being a meaning or some kind of metaphor, this instead feels like a film technique that got out of control.
Maybe Lynne Ramsay wanted to describe how gloomy and dark Grace’s life and her relationship with Jackson were. However, seeing how many dark scenes there are in this film, it feels like it is a silliness that confuses the audience instead of conveying the characters’ emotions.
Not to mention the storyline which for me jumps around following Grace’s non-linear thinking pattern.A number of scenes also seem long-winded as if they were made just to lengthen the duration. If Ramsay really wanted to make the audience tired of watching this film, then he achieved that.
Maybe Die My Love is not for everyone, especially for those who hope for love and the hope of a beautiful life after starting a family is still present in the world.
However, for those who are curious about the dark side of the soul, this film could be like Grace, which crawls with lustful eyes in the middle of a meadow in the middle of the night, touching the adrenaline of psychological thriller fans.
Despite all the absurdity and darkness in Die My Love, Jennifer Lawrence shines in conveying the soul of a mother who is slowly collapsing in the darkness of night.Something that inspires anyone to care more about the souls of the women who have brought new life into the world.
