A former chief executive of a financial asset management company in
China
sentenced to death following a bribery case worth 1.1 billion yuan (around Rp. 2.6 trillion).
Bai Tianhui, former general manager of China Huarong International Holdings, was executed on Tuesday (9/12) after the Supreme Court (MA) approved the death sentence handed down to him.

The execution was carried out by the Tianjin Intermediate People’s Court No.2, where Bai was found guilty of accepting bribes.The court allowed Bai to meet his relatives one last time before the execution.
Bai was sentenced to death at the intermediate court on May 28, 2024.He was also deprived of his political rights for life and his personal assets were confiscated.Bai had submitted an appeal but on February 24 it was rejected by the Tianjin High People’s Court.
According to the MA, from 2014 to 2018 Bai used his position to seek benefits for relevant departments in project acquisitions and company financing, in exchange for bribes worth more than IDR 2.6 trillion.
The Supreme Court decided that Bai’s behavior was a criminal act of bribery and must be punished severely because the amount of the bribe was “very large”, the violation was “very serious”, the social impact was “very bad”, and the losses to the state and society were “very large”.
The Supreme Court finally approved the decision made by the court in Tianjin by noting that the facts in the case were clear, the evidence was sufficient, the application of the law was correct, and the sentence imposed was appropriate.
In China, death sentences imposed by lower courts must be reviewed by the Supreme Court.This sentence can only be carried out after being approved by the Supreme Court.
Reporting from China Daily, Bai’s case follows the high-profile corruption trial of Lai Xiaomin, the former head of China Huarong Asset Management, who was executed in 2021 after being found guilty of receiving more than 1.78 billion yuan (around Rp. 4.2 trillion).
Lai was executed because he was also proven to have embezzled and extorted more than 25 million yuan (around Rp. 59 billion) of public funds.
