Elephants Deployed to Help Clean Up Wood Debris After the Aceh Floods

) Aceh deployed four trained elephants to help clean up wooden debris in residential areas in Pidie Jaya Regency, Aceh which were previously brought by flash floods at the end of last November.

The four elephants who were assisted were named Abu, Mido, Ajis and Noni.

This Monday, the mahots or elephant handlers brought the large mammals to clean up wooden debris in the residential area of Gampong Meunasah Bie, Meurah Dua District, Pidie Jaya Regency.
He explained that the four tame elephants were cleaning up wood and other debris after the disaster.The target is a location where heavy equipment cannot pass.
“We are targeting cleanup in locations affected by flash floods in Meureudu and Meurah Dua Districts, Pidie Jaya Regency,” he said.
Hadi explained that the elephants would help clean up materials stuck in people’s houses.The elephants also helped open road access to residents’ houses which had been buried by floods.
Then, the elephants will also help evacuate anything found at the location, including victims who have not been found.
Meanwhile, Pidie Jaya Police stated that the presence of trained elephants from BKSDA helped the community in cleaning up post-disaster debris.
Today’s cleaning activities are focused on Gampong Meunasah Bie, Meurah Dua District, one of the areas most affected by piles of wood and mud.
In a statement received from the National Police, the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit for the Pidie Jaya Police, Inspector Fauzi Admaja, representing the Chief of the Pidie Jaya Police, said “The four elephants that we brought together with the Aceh BKSDA today are already at the location. We immediately deployed them to pull large logs and other heavy materials that had piled up due to the flood.”
Pidie Jaya Police Chief AKBP Ahmad Faisal Pasaribu also provided an explanation regarding the purpose of the elephant’s arrival.Apart from helping with the clean-up process, these elephants were also provided as a form of psychological support for children affected by the flood.
“We brought these elephants not only to lift heavy materials, but also for activities

for flood victim children.”The presence of elephants can create a cheerful atmosphere, reduce tension and help restore their psychological condition,” said the Police Chief.
Distribution of logistical aid for flood victims
Apart from that, elephants can also be used to deliver logistics to flood victims in Pidie Jaya.
“For the duration, we will work here for seven days, the last date being December 14 2025,” said Hadi.
He explained that the tame elephants who helped carry out the cleaning had long experience.These animals with long trunks were also involved in helping clean up material during the Aceh tsunami disaster in 2004.
“Based on previous experience, including during the tsunami in Aceh, the presence of elephants really helped clear the rubble,” said Hadi.
He added that currently they are only focusing on helping with disaster management in Pidie Jaya first, considering that access to other districts is not yet accessible.
“So far we haven’t gone to other areas, because surveys are still needed and access to other districts cannot be reached. In the future, if needed, we are ready to help,” said Hadi.
